The Green Team

The Future is Green!

The first project of its kind in the U.S., Zarco 66’s new Green Energy Gateway in Lawrence, KS is a marvel of innovative design and state-of-the-art technology. It does more than simply provide a venue for the distribution of eco-friendly alternative fuels like ethanol and bio-diesel — it serves as a model for how to cost-efficiently renovate an existing site using a “build green” blueprint. .

Developed in partnership with the Kansas Department of Health and the federal EPA, Zarco 66’s Green Energy Gateway has already won the EPA’s Blue Skyways Award for clean design. The site not only extensively utilizes recycled materials in its construction, but is also designed to harness both wind and solar power for its own energy needs. One of its most striking features is its “living roof,” a rooftop garden that will reduce rainwater runoff, decrease the “heat island” effect prevalent in urban areas, and help filter airborne pollutants and greenhouse gases. Other features are less noticeable but equally important, from energy-efficient lighting to a new “soft touch” car wash that uses 50% less water than traditional touchless washes. .

The Green Energy Gateway also helps educate consumers about the 4 R’s — reduce, recycle, renew and reuse — with environmental videos shown on the fuel dispensers’ color monitors. The message is simple: where the environment is concerned, even small individual actions add up to big collective benefits. .

In additional to offering traditional gas and diesel products, the site also features on- and off-road bio-diesel grades and a variety of ethanol blends. To find out if your vehicle is compatible with one of the alternative fuels offered at the Green Energy Gateway, please click here.
